Viola Whetzel, 78 of Westernport passed away on January 28, 2022.

Born on June 10, 1943, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna (Miller) Bishop. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Whetzel; second husband, Albert Whetzel; daughter, Robin Smith; granddaughter, Kara Rae Shambaugh and her infant sister, Lou Emma Bishop.

Viola was the matriarch of her family. She had a golden heart, was a “Mother” to many, and her door was always open to family and friends.

Viola was once a member of the Tri-Towns EMS Co. 50 as well as a member of Potomac Fire Company 22 Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Westernport American Legion and the Redman Black Hawk Tribe #131.

Viola is survived by her loving family, her children, Stephanie Shambaugh and husband, Ron of Cumberland, Elizabeth Garde and fiancé Leonard of Finzel, Richard Whetzel, Jr. and wife, Dee of Westernport, David Robertston of Westernport, Kayeanna Whetzel of Westernport, Michelle Goff and husband, Larry of Savage River, Andy Whetzel and partner Cathy of Keyser, Eric Whetzel and wife, Laura of Westernport, Tina Bosley and husband, Shane of Bloomington, and Scott Whetzel and fiancée, Wendy of Keyser. She is also survived by her sisters, Mable, Patsy, Elaine, Phyllis, Mary, Emily, Margaret, Jennifer and Ginger; brothers, Ray, Michael, Richard, Jimmy and Walter. Viola is survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport on Thursday, February 3rd from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Friday, February 4th at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Bruce McBride officiating.

Interment will be at Bloomington Cemetery.

Viola’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the 7th floor staff at UPMC Western Maryland for the wonderful care Viola received the last few weeks. Also, her family is especially grateful for Pastor Bruce McBride’s kindness and compassion, Viola always looked forward to visits with him.
