August 7, 1934 — January 18, 2022

Barton, MD

Paul Edward Metz, 87, of Barton passed away on January 18, with his sons at his side at the Egle Nursing and Rehab Center in Lonaconing, where he was a resident.

Born August 7, 1934 in Barton, Maryland, Paul was the son of the late Earl and Vera (Mowbray) Metz. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Doris E. (Kyle) Metz.

Paul is survived by his sons, Steven Metz and his wife Julie of Lucketts, VA, and Jeffery Metz and his wife Jamie of Frostburg. He is also survived by his grandchildren, J.P. Metz and his wife Grace, A.J. Metz and his fiancé Steffanie May, Lexie Metz, Joshua Metz, and great grandson J.J. Metz, and his brother William Metz, of Vidor, Texas.

Paul was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy where he served on the destroyer, USS Waller from 1954 to 1958 and got to see much of the world. He worked building truck tires for Kelly Springfield for 28 years until the plant’s closure. He finished his career working for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services where he was a Youth Supervisor at the Savage Mountain Youth Detention Center, earning Employee of the Year honors. He never missed work and his co-workers will tell you no one worked harder than Paul.

Paul was devoted to his family and spent the majority of his spare time coaching his boys in baseball, soccer, and basketball. He never missed any of their games nor any of the games of his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons. He was known as a math whiz and amazed his family with being able to solve any problem in his head.

After retirement, Paul enjoyed trips to Ocean City with his wife throughout the summer. They both also served for many years as Camp Host at New Germany State Park.

Paul was a life-long member of the Barton United Methodist Church. He faithfully attended service for over 12 years at the Bethel Holiness Church in Lonaconing until his health deteriorated. He was an avid studier of the Bible even after his eyesight was poor. He never met a stranger and helped anyone he could.

Paul spent the last two years of his life residing at the Egle Nursing and Rehab Center in Lonaconing, where his son Jeff is Administrator. He always had a smile for all staff and residents and was known for handing out winter mint candies to other residents. He was also known for his twice a day workout even as his health deteriorated.

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, a private service for family and close friends will be held at the Bethel Holiness Church, with the Reverend David Schoch officiating.

Family would like to thank the staff at WVU’s Potomac Valley Hospital for their care. They would also like to especially thank the staff and residents at Egle who became Paul’s caregivers and friends over the past two years. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of a donation to the Egle Activities Fund.
