Mary Eloise (Johnston) Foley, 100, of Goodwill Nursing Home, Grantsville, MD, and formerly of McHenry, MD, passed away on October 11, 2020. Born in Swanton, MD on September 3, 1920, she was the daughter of the late John Albert Johnston, Sr. and Hazel Ellen (Miller) Johnston.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Melvin Foley; her daughters, Rosemary Johnston Foley and Melanie Blaine (Foley) Rodney; Sisters, Evelyn Johnston, and Florence Shaffer and Brother Kenneth Johnston.

Mary was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Westernport, where she taught Sunday school. She retired from the First United Bank in 1985 and had also been employed at Westvaco and Wepco Federal Credit Union. She was a lifetime member of the Deep Creek Lake Lioness Club serving as President and was chosen Lioness of the year in 1996. She was also a member of the Garrett Humane Society and was recognized for her passion for animals and the rescue and placing of homeless animals. Many other animals remained at her home and became her “babies”. Mary never met a stranger and was always making new friends. She was a funny, kind, caring woman and a treasure to have a relative and friend. She was a 1939 graduate of Bruce High School.

Mary is survived by one sister, Lois Marks of Kalamazoo, MI; two brothers, John Johnston, Jr., and wife, Bessie of Westernport and Paul Johnston, Sr. of Keyser, WV. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she considered her grandchildren and her many friends.

Special thanks to all of the caregivers at Goodwill Nursing Home who gave Mary excellent care.

Family and friends will be received at Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Friday, October 16th from 6 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 7 with Pastor Sandy Cowan officiating.
