Kenneth Smith

Kenneth “Kenny” Dwire Smith, Barton, passed away peacefully at Western Maryland Health System surrounded by loved ones on January 2, 2020 at the age of 84.  Born January 25, 1935 in Lonaconing, he was the son of Edgar M Smith, Sr and Della Mae (Clingerman) Smith.

Kenny was preceded in death by two sisters, Loretta Smith and Ada V Kifer and three brothers, Luther G Smith, Edgar M Smith, Jr, and Lloyd Wayne “Red” Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Faye (Kallmyer) Smith, married in Lonaconing on November 18, 1955.   Kenny is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Kathy Simpson (John), Midlothian, VA; his son Kevin (Darlene), Frostburg, MD; four grandchildren, Matt Smith (Kaila), Ashley Simpson, Tim Smith (Amanda), Neil Simpson (Corinne); three great-grandchildren, Mesa Smith, Memphis Smith, and Ellsworth Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Smith (Margaret), Middleburg, FL, his sister, Leona Clark, Lonaconing, MD; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Kenny had a great work ethic throughout his lifetime.  He started picking coal at an early age with his brother Robert.  They had the town blacksmith build a wagon that would hold 1 ton of coal, which they used to deliver house coal from Beechwood into Lonaconing.  Kenny graduated Central High School in 1953.  A butcher by trade he spent 33 years with Acme markets and finished his career managing the meat department at Farley’s in Cumberland.

Hunting and fishing were Kenny’s favorite pastimes.  In his early adulthood he enjoyed raccoon hunting and kept rabbit dogs.  He looked forward to hunting deer every fall on Big Savage Mountain with Kevin Creegan, Terry DeShong, and their gang.  After retirement he became an avid turkey hunter and spent many mornings listening for gobblers with his son, Kevin.  Trout fishing was his favorite springtime activity, catching his limit any time he went. Mornings spent at Savage River and Laurel Run brought him pleasure in his retirement years.

Kenny enjoyed his garden, growing enough vegetables to share with his neighbors.  Kenny and Faye would can enough vegetables to last through the winter.

At the age of twelve Kenny accepted Christ.  He passionately shared the gospel with those he met.  A lifetime member of First Assembly of God in Lonaconing, he served as Deacon, Secretary, Sunday School Superintendent, Usher, Sunday School Teacher, and Royal Ranger Leader.  He was active in Men’s Ministry and coordinated the Sportsman’s Banquet for many years.  His recipe for roast venison is still requested by those who attended.

Kenny’s greatest joy in life was his family.  He looked forward to every visit with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel in Barton, on Sunday, January 5 from 3pm to 6pm.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 6 at the First Assembly of God in Lonaconing at 10:30am with Rev. Phillip Foster and Rev. Rob Culler.  There will be 1 hour of viewing prior to the service.

Interment will be at Laurel Hills Cemetery, Moscow, MD.
