Joseph "Sonny" Kyle

Joseph W. “Sonny” Kyle of Barton, died on May 30, 2020 at UPMC Western Maryland.

Born May 15, 1934, he was the son of the late Charles and Merle (Callis) Kyle and son-in-law to the late Lester and Bernadine Chaney. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy and his six siblings.

Sonny is survived by his loving wife of 67 ½ years, Monta Jean (Chaney) Kyle, the love of his life. He is also survived by his children, Debbie Hennessey and Rickie Kyle and wife, Robin. Sonny had eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sonny was a 1952 graduate of Barton high School. He retired from FSU as Chief Maintenance Engineer in 1994. Sonny was a lifetime member of the Barton United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee for 15 years. Sonny was a devoted member of the church, he was always available to provide any service that was needed.  He was a dedicated volunteer fireman for the Barton Hose Co. #1. He was the oldest living fireman at the time of his death with over 50 years of service. Sonny was a 50 year member of the Blue Lodge of Lonaconing, 50 year member of the Eastern Star Lodge, serving as Past Worthy Patron. Sonny belonged to the Scotish Rites and Ali Ghan Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Motor Corp within the Shrine Temple. Sonny served as Chairman of several of the chili cook offs. He served on the Cumberland Sanitary Commission for a number of years, and with FEMA in time of crisis.

He was generous beyond measure. Sonny was a loving, dedicated husband and family man. His family always came first. He was a wonderful Father and Grandfather, setting high standards for his family to follow. Sonny was the “best” man a person could ever be fortunate to know. He was a “Jack of all trades”. One is of his favorite pastimes was line dancing. Family, faith and friends were his life. He will be loved, honored and remembered always in our hearts. Sonny will be sadly missed.

The family would like to express a special thank you to a dear family friend, Mike Strozykowski for helping to provide transportation to Johns Hopkins and for helping the family by running errands and general occasional repairs. His time is so greatly appreciated.

Family and friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton on Thursday, June 4th from 6 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will take place at the Barton United Methodist Church on Friday, June 5th at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Sandy Cowan officiating. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service.

With respect to state regulations at this time, face masks must be worn and social distancing administered during the visitation and funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Latrobe Street, Barton, Maryland.

Interment will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
