Betty Hartman

September 7, 1935 — April 1, 2020

Westernport

Betty Louise Hartman, 84, of Westernport, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2020, in Egle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.  She was known as “Rosebud” by all those who love her.  She was given the nickname by her father when she was a little girl and carried it with her for a lifetime.

Born September 7, 1935, in Westernport, Rosebud was the daughter of the late Leslie and Mary Louise (Biddle) Miller.  She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Jean and Norma, and seven brothers, Russell “Panama”, Forace, Kenny, Donald, Marvin, Alvin and Richard.

For most of her adult life Rosebud was a “busy bee” around the town of Westernport.  She could be seen daily walking rapidly up and down Johnson Street on Westernport Hill and all-around town.  She never learned or had a license to drive.  She was an active member of the Petunia Council of the Improved Order of Red Men in Westernport.  She worked over thirty years as a barmaid at the Red Men Club and Victory Post 155, American Legion, in her hometown.  In addition, Rosebud was a very able housekeeper for many families in the area.

A lover of geography and travel, Rosebud took many bus trips and cruises to various states and islands of the Caribbean Sea.  Her favorite destination was two trips to Hawaii, where she visited several islands.  The exotic animals and plants of the 50th state left her with the desire to make additional visits to places in America.

A dedicated Christian, Rosebud was a long time member of the Westernport Church of the Brethren where she wore many hats, including membership on the Witness Commission, time keeper and bell ringer for Sunday School classes, served as official Morning Worship attendance counter, assisted in the church library, participated in planning and serving dinners, and enjoyed being a member of the traveling luncheon group.  For many years she served as the church custodian. She loved the Lord Jesus and was ever faithful.

Rosebud leaves behind a son, Steve Hartman of Keyser and a brother, Clyde Miller and his fiancée, Christa Grove of Westernport. She often spoke warmly of three nieces, Marilyn “Cookie” Rounds, and Gloria and Jennette Miller.  She loved her special caregivers: Kathy Van Meter, Pat and Shirley McCarty, and Linda and Bill Whitlock.   The number of steadfast friends helped warm her heart. She was an inspiration to many people and never met a stranger.

Due to the current pandemic, Rosebud will be cremated.  For the safety of relatives and friends will be no visitation at the Boal Funeral Home.  A memorial service and inurnment will be held at a later date.
