Amel Muir, 94, of Lonaconing passed away on September 16, 2020 at Egle Nursing & Rehab.

Born September 8, 1926 in Pekin, he was the son of the late Stanley D. and Margaret (Beeman) Muir. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou (Robertson) Muir; and his siblings, Stanley E. Muir, Audrey Sloan and Inez Kiddy Neff.

Amel was a graduate of Central High School in Lonaconing. He was a very proud WWII United States Navy Veteran, where he was stationed in the Philippines. He was a member of the Barton American Legion Post #189 and the Queens Point VFW, McCoole. Amel was a member of the Good Will Fire Company No.1 of Lonaconing for 63 years, he was the oldest living member of the department. He was a member of the Georges Creek Valley Masonic Lodge #161. Amel was appointed to the Election Board, he was a Past President and eventually retired from the organization. He was a member and Past President of the Lonaconing Republican Club. He was elected to the Republican States Central Committee.

Amel was a truck driver for Fairmont Foods for 23 years and retired from Strohman Bread after 17 years of service. He was a Little League and Pony League coach. Amel was especially proud of coaching the 1964 undefeated Coney Indians.

Amel is survived by his sons, Charles Muir and wife, Sally of Barton and Bruce Muir and wife, Mary Louise of Lonaconing. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Julie Thomas, Kristal Trunkett and husband, Donald, Maggie Muir and friend, DJ Bray, Angela Bowser and husband, Dan; his great grandchildren, Haley, Chase, Kyle, Peyton, Devin, Arianna; and great-great grandson, Braxton. Amel is survived by his sister-in-law, Linda Coleman and husband, Tom; brother-in-law, Allen “Skeet” Trenum; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton on Sunday, September 20th from 4 to 7 p.m. The Good Will Fire Company No.1, Barton American Legion Post #189 followed by the Georges Creek Valley Masonic Lodge will hold memorial services honoring Amel beginning at 6:00 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, September 21st at 1:30 p.m. with Rev Thomas Morgan officiating.  There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service at 12:30 p.m.

Graveside military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Combined Veterans Honor Guard at Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.

The family would like to express gratitude to Egle Nursing & Rehab staff for the excellent care extended towards Amel over the past years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Egle Nursing & Rehab or The First Presbyterian Church of Lonaconing.
