William Chalmer Carpenter, 93, of North Davis St, Keyser, passed away at the home of his daughter in Flintstone, MD on Sunday, November 2, 2014.
Born February 16, 1921 in Westernport, MD, he was the son of the late George Martin Carpenter and the late Nellie (Vanpelt) Carpenter. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen (Noonan) Carpenter, a son, Dennis Michael Carpenter, two sisters, Kathleen and Anna Lee Carpenter, four brothers, Kenneth, Lawrence, Richard, and Ronald Carpenter, and an infant brother, Robert Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter was a 1938 graduate of Bruce High School, where he was the goalie for the soccer team. He was a United States Army Veteran, having been a Sergeant during World War II. He retired from Westvaco Corp, with 46 years of service, having worked in 2, 4, and 5 machine rooms. Mr. Carpenter was a life member of the Keyser Volunteer Fire Department, and was a trustee for many years of “Old Lil”, the 1914 fire truck. He was also a member of the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Fireman’s Association and the West Virginia Fireman’s Association.
He leaves behind a daughter, Susan Schoenadel and son-in-law Michael of Flintstone, MD, a brother, Charles Carpenter of Westernport, MD, a sister, Delores Carpenter of Martinsburg, and a grandchild, Mary Ellen McGoye of Hagerstown, MD.
Friends and family will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, MD, on Tuesday from 3 to 7 PM. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 11:00 AM, with Father William K. Matheny Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Keyser.
