Wilbur "Gashouse" Johnson

Wilbur William Johnson, 82, known as “Gashouse” to all, suddenly passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013, at his residence in Barton, Maryland.
He was born, April 13, 1931 in Pekin, Maryland to the late Wilbur “Farmer” Johnson and Anna Staup Johnson.
Gashouse was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1950, as well as a US Army veteran, serving in Germany. He was a superintendent, in the finishing department at Westvaco, now New Page. He was member of the Frostburg Moose 348, Cresaptown Eagles2883, and the American Legion Post 155. He was also a member of the Fore Sister’s Golf Course, and past member of Maple Hurst, and Oakland Country Club. Most people never get to experience having a hole in one, but Gas had four of them! He was known as the “ambassador” of Fore Sister’s Golf course, always welcoming golfers, offering them balls, telling them to have a great game, a place he loved dearly.
Gashouse never met a stranger. He loved to be the jokester and had many famous sayings, “Might as well be here, as where you at,” “The sun doesn’t shine on one dog’s a** all the time,” “Judy, is the best cook on the street, but we don’t live on a big street,” “ Who gives a rat’s A**” “ It’s time for cocktail, do you know any good ones,” and finally, “I almost made a mistake today and took a drink of water, instead of ole Grand Dad.” He loved to dance to Mack the Knife, he and Judy could tear up the dance floor.
He was known as the greatest pigeon shooter in the area. He loved hunting and fishing. He took pride in having the nicest, cleanest yard around. He would spend hours upon hours doing yard work. He loved to entertain all his friends and family. He loved watching all his grandchildren play sports.
He will sadly be missed by his wife of 57 years, Judy (Dye) Johnson. His six children, Gaye Lynn Johnson, and partner Chris Smith, Westernport, Gary Johnson and his wife, Amy of Barton, Sheila Johnson Lewis and husband Joseph Lewis of Barton, Bob Johnson and his wife, Melanie of Pekin, Bruce Johnson and wife Melinda, of Charleston, South Carolina, and Eric Johnson and wife, Carlie Boal Johnson of Westernport. He leaves behind two Brother-in-laws, Jimmy Gowans and wife Judy of Moscow and William Gowans, Cresaptown. He leaves behind 16 Grandchildren, who know him as, “Pappy Gas.” Brandi Whitacre, and husband Adam, Bel Air, Jamie Wilson, and husband Chuck, LaVale, Brooke Snyder and husband Brian, Westernport, Jodie Lewis, Frederick, Maggie Lewis, Frostburg, and Carlie Lewis, Barton. Adam Johnson and wife, Ashley of Pekin, Casey Johnson and partner, Samantha Morris, Laci and Emily Johnson, Barton , Hali and Megan Bostjancic, Pekin, Lacy Mazzone, South Carolina, Leighton, Emrick and his “Buddy” Seth Johnson, Westernport. He leaves behind, 15 Great Grandchildren, with one Great Grandson on the way and also has one Great Great Granddaughter, Isabella Reed. Numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many wonderful and dear friends.
Gas had the highest respect for his life long friend, Coach Don Moran. They traveled together to California, Maryland ACIT games, and Florida. Gas cherished their friendship.
Family and Friends will be received at Boal Funeral Home, Barton, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service in Gashouse’s honor will held on Saturday, November 30 at 11 a.m. with Mon Signor Paul Byrnes officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to services.
The family request that memorials for Gashouse be directed to the Tri-Towns Rescue squad or the Barton Volunteer Fire Department. A private interment will be held later. Arrangements were entrusted to Boal Funeral Home of Barton.
