Thomas R. Marsh, 78, of Westernport passed away November 22, 2023 at home surrounded by his family.
Born July 30, 1945, he was the son of the late Clyde and Gladys (Miller) Marsh. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Irvin, Clyde, and Ray, and three sisters, Evelyn McCarty, Mary Lou Smith, and Beanie Failinger. He was the last surviving member of his family.
Tom was a lifelong resident of Westernport. He graduated from Bruce High School in 1963. After high school he served in the United States Marine Corps for three years before transferring to the US Army and earning his wings with the US Army Special Forces. After leaving the military, he began a life of entrepreneurship, first establishing Marsh Kitchens and Building Products, providing custom cabinetry to the local area. In 1974, he and his wife Jackie purchased the Chat-N-Chew Restaurant, which they have continually operated for over 49 years. Additional endeavors included the Laundry Basket and Super Pressure Car Wash in McCoole, and the Marsh Apartments in Frostburg.
He was many things to those that knew him - a businessman, a carpenter, a jack of all trades, an activist and advocate for community schools, but more than anything, he was the consummate family man. His children and grandchildren were the pride of his life.
He is survived by Jackie, his wife of 57 years; two sons, Troy (Stacey) of Atlanta, GA, Adam (Susan) of Castle Rock, CO; one daughter, Maria, of Rawlings; two grandsons, Ryan of Tuscaloosa, AL and Tyler of Rawlings; Tyler’s father, Scott Quinn; and his cat Karl.
