Shirley Nightengale Smith, 83, of Garfield St, Ridgeley, formerly of Barton, MD, passed away Monday, August 29, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Sharon.

Born October 1, 1932 in Lonaconing, MD, she was the daughter of the late Daniel T. and Agnes (Thompson) Nightingale.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Stafford Smith Jr., an infant son, James Earl Smith, two brothers, Paul and Bob Nightengale and a sister, Norma Jean Daniels.

Shirley was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing.  She was a retired senior insurance adjuster, having worked for State Auto Mutual Insurance.

She leaves behind a daughter, Sharon Morgan and husband Harry of Ridgeley, a son, Kevin Smith and girlfriend, Brenda Childress of Stephens City, VA, four brothers, William Nightingale of Frostburg, MD, Dan Nightengale of LaVale, MD, Jack Nightingale of Lonaconing, MD, Woodrow Nightingale of Lonaconing, MD, a sister, Louise Hott of Cumberland, MD, two grandchildren, Matthew Morgan of Millersville, MD, and Adam Morgan of Ridgeley and numerous sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-laws and other relatives.

Friends and family will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, MD, on Wednesday, August 31st from 3 to 7 PM.

A funeral service will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing, on Thursday, September 1st at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Fred Iser and Rev. Alexa Smith officiating.

Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park, Frostburg, MD.

The family extends special thanks to Comfort Keepers, Natasha and Heidi, and Potomac Valley Hospice, including her hospice nurse, Jennifer for all of the compassionate care given to their mother.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to First United Methodist Church, 14 Church St, Lonaconing, MD 21539.
