Russell F. “Baked Beans” Abernathy Sr., 69, of Piedmont, passed away Friday, September 26, 2014.

Born August 20, 1945 in Beryl, WV, he was the son of the late Walter and Ethel (Smith) Abernathy.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Abernathy, a sister, Ruth Lantz, one grandchild and nine infant brothers and sisters.

He leaves behind three sons, Russell F. Abernathy Jr, Ray and Sharon Abernathy both of Morgantown, and Jimmy Abernathy of North Carolina, three brothers, Robert Abernathy of Oakland, MD, James Abernathy, Gerald Abernathy both of Keyser, five sisters, Irene Wilson, Geraldine Abernathy, Brenda Karlawitz,  all of Piedmont, Mary Ann Beeman of Arizona, and Nancy Elliott of Cumberland, MD.  He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Frank Lantz Sr., four grandchildren, including Dalton, whom he was very close to, and one great grandchild.

Friends and family will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM.  A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home chapel on Thursday at 11:00 AM, with Rev. George Tichinel officiating.

Interment will be in Tasker Cemetery, Cross, WV.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Boal Funeral Home, 111 Church St, Westernport, MD 21562, to help defray funeral expenses.
