Richard “Dick” Garfield Moffatt, 77, of Lonaconing, passed away at his residence on Friday, May 15, 2015 while surrounded by loved ones.

Born July 13, 1937 in Barton, “Dick” was the son of the late Richard and Nellie (Warnick) Moffatt.  He was also preceded in death by his loving sister, Elaine Nightingale.

Surviving are his brother, James Moffatt and wife Barbara, and his brother-in-law, Woodrow Nightingale Sr.  Also surviving are his nephew, Woodrow Nightingale Jr. and wife Sue Ann, his niece, Leslie Nightingale, his niece, Paula Nightingale and husband Todd Bennett and their children, Dylan, Kate, Harrison, and Lain “Mac”.  He is also survived by nephew Jeff Moffatt and wife Barbetta, their children, Jessica, Jesse, Peter, and David and niece Susan Johnson and husband Aaron, and their children Ava, Kylee, and Zach.  He leaves behind numerous cousins and a special aunt, Edna Atkinson.  In addition, “Dick” is survived by his wonderful caregivers, Susan, Ashley, Amber, Starr, and Alexa.

“Dick” was born with Cerebral Palsy, however he did not let that define who he was nor did he let his disease stop him from living a full life.  “Dick” was home schooled by his mother and was very intelligent, especially with remembering names, numbers, and addresses of loved ones.  He enjoyed playing cards, board games, and watching the game show network.  “Dick” beat the odds in so many ways and lived such a full and loving life due to the care and dedication that he received from his parents, his sister Elaine and brother-in-law, Woody and his niece Leslie.

Friends and family will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Sunday, May 17th from 5 to 8 PM.  A funeral service will be conducted at the Boal Chapel on Monday, May 18th at 11:00 AM with Rev. Thomas Morgan officiating.  Friends will also be received one hour prior to funeral service.

Interment will be held privately for the family at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

The family ask that no flowers be sent to the funeral home.  Memorial contributions can be made top Friends Aware Inc., 1601 Holland St, Cumberland, MD  21502, League for Crippled Children, 12501 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD 21502, Georges Creek Ambulance Service, 19 Union St, Lonaconing, MD 21539, or Western Maryland Health System, Hospice Care, 1050 W. “Dick” was so very special to many people but he was especially special to me.  We definitely had our ups and downs, our fights, our tears and our many, many laughs.  “Dick” has taught me so very much, about life and about myself; he helped mold me into the person that I am today and I will forever be grateful that I had the chance to have such and amazing uncle in my life.  You will be missed knucklehead but I will see you again one day……Love you, Leslie
