Westernport, MD

Oscar Frederick “Fred” Cavin Jr., 83, of 306 Baughman St, Westernport, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013 at his residence.

Born April 17, 1930 in Sneedville, TN, he was the son of the late Oscar Frederick Cavin Sr. and Lelia (Williams) Cavin.  He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Arthur “Cowboy” Umstot, his mother-in-law, Hannah Umstot, a granddaughter, Erin Greene, and three brothers and one sister.

Fred was a line foreman with Tele-Media Company (now Comcast) for over 40 years.  He never met a stranger, and he made friends all over the area.  He was generous and well-respected, and he had a “one-of-kind” sense of humor enjoyed by so many.  In fact, he could be quite the jokester.

In his younger years, Fred spent countless hours with all of his children’s friends and neighbors riding the zip-line, playing kickball (where he was always the pitcher) and orchestrating the grass-roots effort in rebuilding Greene Street Playground in the 1970’s.  He was also quite proud to build a beautiful new home for his family.

He loved woodworking with the late Jim Roderick at the woodshop in Piedmont, and he also loved working his vegetable garden every summer.  He enjoyed family vacations, picnics and outings, and his wife Janet cherished the beautiful mammoth sunflowers he grew each summer.

He leaves behind his wife, Janet Fay Umstot Cavin, of which they just celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on June 23, 2013, four children, Trish Morgan and husband Tony of Barton, Rick Cavin of Pennsylvania, Jenny Whiteman of Cumberland, Debbie Greene of Culpepper, VA, and a special daughter-in-law, Patsy Butts of Westernport.  He is also survived by his grandchildren, T.J. Morgan and wife Sarah, Karin Johnston, Sherry Wood and husband Wilbur, Kevin Johnston, Christopher Johnston, Andy Morgan, Dustin Cavin, Ryan Greene, Sierra Cavin and significant other Jackie Wade, Lindsey Cavin, step grandchildren, Mandy and Chae Whiteman, great grandchildren, Cameron and Devon Jones, Kamden Morgan, Alexis Johnston, Aubree Morgan, Christopher Johnston Jr., and Colt Whiteman, special friends Harold Bradley, Roy Droll, and Don Stephens, and his “babies” Tigger and Toni, who shared his lap and snacks for 15 years.

Friends and family will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Monday from 3 to 8 PM.  A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Sandy Cowan officiating and Deacon Harold Bradley assisting.
