Westernport, MD
Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Snyder, 79, of Westernport, passed away on May 1, 2022.
Born on September 25, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Dorothy (Phillips) Steele. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Steele; and her cousin and best friend, Carolee Crawford.
Betty grew up in Lonaconing. Some of her fondest memories from her childhood was the time she spent on her families’ farms. During these years she formed a close bond with her cousins and she remained close to them her entire life. She graduated from Valley High School in 1960. Betty was an exceptional wife and mother staying at home to raise her children until they were in high school. She never missed a function, attending every PTA meeting, fieldtrip, and ball game. Even as a grandmother the tradition of attending functions continued. She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. Betty became a “second” mom to many of the children in the neighborhood. She always ensured that every child who crossed her threshold was safe, healthy, and happy. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. She volunteered as the school nurse at Bruch High School. After raising her children, she went to work at First United Bank as a teller where she worked for 24 years retiring in 2009. She regularly brought macaroni salad to the home of grieving neighbors and friends. Betty was giving almost to a fault, consumed with making everyone happy, even in declining health Betty never stopped giving, loving and caring for family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Jackie Snyder (Denise Spitzer) of Westernport, Mary Beth Mayles (Billy) of Hedgesville; grandchildren, Jr Mayles (Stephanie Broadwater), Jason Mayles (Hannah); and a great granddaughter that is expected to arrive in November. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and best friend, Louise Steele; nieces and nephews, Kevin and Beth Steele, Debbie and Mike Cebotar, Greg and Robin Snyder, Judy Reid; numerous great nieces and nephews; and “the cousins”, Diane, Linda, Sharon, Betsy and Becky.
Family and friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Thursday, May 5th from 2 to 5 p.m. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 5:00 p.m. with Harold Bradley officiating. Immediately following the service family will host a celebration dinner.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be directed to any local animal shelter in her name.
