Mary Catherine "Cathy" Wildman

June 7, 1943 — August 25, 2018

Westernport

Swanton, MD

Mary Catherine Wildman, 75, of Swanton, MD and The Villages, FL went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 25, 2018.

Born on June 7, 1943 in Frostburg, MD, “Cathy” was the only daughter of the late Bernard Carter and Edna (McGowan) Carter Downton.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Bernard “Bunny” Carter, and Barry Downton.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth R. Wildman and her daughters Susan Piavis (husband Paul), Denton, MD and Laurie Turner, Avilton, MD.   Cathy was the proud and doting grandmother of five grandsons: Nickolas Turner and Samuel Turner, Avilton, MD and McCabe Piavis, Henry Piavis and Owen Piavis, Denton, MD.  She also leaves behind her brothers Thomas “Marvin” Carter (wife Alexa), Midland, MD, Jeffrey Downton (wife Lisa), Avilton, MD, and Gary Downton (wife Christine), New York, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Cathy was a retired school teacher and served the children of Garrett County for 25 years teaching at Bloomington Elementary, Kitzmiller Elementary, and Southern Middle School.  She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Swanton, where she played piano for many years.  She was also a member of Fairway Christian Church, The Villages, FL which she attended during the winter months and sang in the choir.

Cathy and her husband loved to travel and she met and made friends all over the world.  She never knew a stranger.  She especially enjoyed getting together with friends to play Mahjong in both Florida and Maryland.  Cathy was an avid gardener of both vegetables and flowers.  She loved to craft and often set up a table of her wares at the local farmer’s market.  She loved attending her grandsons’ sporting events and school activities and creating fun activities for the boys and their friends to do when they visited.  Planning “get-togethers” for family and friends was also one of her favorite activities.

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home in Westernport, on Sunday, September 2, 2018 from 1-3pm.  A memorial service will be conducted by Reverend Donald Nelson at the funeral home at 3pm.

A separate memorial service is being planned to be held in Florida in October.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that Cathy’s memory be kept alive through helping children to grow.  Her family is involved with the nonprofit organization, Exquisite Basketball (P.O. Box 172 Greensboro MD  21632; exquisitebasketball.org).  Legacy gifts made to this organization in Cathy’s name will help to fund the construction of a youth center on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
