Mary Norma (Shaw) Nelson

April 24, 1934 — June 2, 2024

Moscow, Maryland

Moscow, MD—

Norma Shaw Nelson, 90, of Moscow passed away June 2, 2024.

Born April 24, 1934 at Frostburg Miners Hospital, she was the daughter of the deceased Harry Shaw and Marie O’Halloran Shaw. She was also preceded in death by her one sister-in-law Martha Robertson Shaw and her second husband, Joseph A. Nelson, SR.

Upon her birth, she was given the name of Mary Norma Shaw. She was called “Honeybunch” until she was age 6 and when she started school, she was enrolled as “Norma Lee Shaw”. When she was first married, her name became Norma Shaw Andrews and then upon her second marriage her name became Norma S. Andrew-Nelson. Name confusion became a common situation to explain.

Norma is survived by two sons: Daniel Andrews, Bel Air, MD; and Stephen Andrews of Annapolis, MD. She is also survived by one brother Ronnie Shaw of Lonaconing. Four wonderful grandchildren also remain: Jenny Marie Andrews of Burlington, VT; Justin Andrews and wife Jennifer of Pensacola, Florida; Matthew and Michael Andrews of Whiteford, MD; and two precious great-grandchildren Emmett Andrews and Aubrey Andrews. Close friends are mothers of the grandchildren Brenda Andrews and Beth Andrews. Norma had one special nephew, Craig Shaw and wife Brenda who were of great support. She is survived by several nieces and some very special and helpful Shaw cousins and friends, especially Bev and Cindy, she was eternally grateful for their friendship and support.

Norma was a 1952 graduate of Barton High School and a graduate of Frostburg State University with master degree in Education, School Counseling, and Administration. She also did graduate studies at West Virginia University. She is retired from the Allegany County Public School System in 2009 after 42 years of service (8 years at Allegany High, 10 years at Beall High, and 24 years as Pupil Service Worker with the main office). Norma loved working in education and met many outstanding students and families, many fine teachers, and dedicated professionals.

Norma was a member of St Peter Catholic Church, the Allegany County and Maryland State Retirement group, the Golden Oldies bowling league, and a special group of retired friends. She was a fan of the movies and saw most of the current films. She was a Baltimore Orioles fan and worked Camden Yards on weekends for eight years. She liked to read especially about history and politics. Some of her favorite activities involved her fantastic Shaw family from all the aunts and uncles to many cousins.

Another favorite thing to do was spend time with her grandchildren. She had many memories of trips taken together and liked keeping in touch with them with her iPhone. She was grateful for her two sons and the knowledge she received from her grandchildren, the best teachers of all! She had unforgettable times with each of them.

In accordance to her wish there will be no services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Georges Creek Library, Lonaconing, MD.
