Martha Geraldine Shimer, 83, of McKinley St, Westernport, passed away Monday, August 3, 2015 at Heartland of Keyser.

Born September 11, 1931 in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Richard L. and Bessie (Curling) West.  She was also preceded in death by eight brothers, Robert, Jamie, David, Richard, George, Henry, Jerry and Carl West, and two sisters, Irene Casper-Small and Eunice Mott.

Martha went to school in South Norfolk.  She was previously employed by Frank Miller’s Shop and Preston’s Pharmacy.  She lived in Virginia until 1957, then moved to Westernport.  She was a former member of South Norfolk Baptist Church, Bear Creek Church of the Brethren and most recently Westernport Church of the Brethren.  She was a member of the Homebuilder’s Sunday School Class, secretary to the Women’s Fellowship and served on various other committees.  Martha volunteered at Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home for 18 years.  She also enjoyed reading, gardening, crafts and playing organ.

She leaves behind her husband whom she married June 6, 1954 in South Norfolk, VA, William Shimer, a son, William Shimer Jr. and wife Melva of Westernport, a daughter, Pamela Fike and husband Jeff of Bridgewater, VA, three grandsons, Matthew Shimer and wife Katrina, Brian Fike and wife Jessica, Jason Fike and wife Heather, and a sister, Elizabeth Tarkenton of New Bern, NC.  She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Trey and Landon Shimer, Ally, Jack and Joel Fike, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received at the Westernport Church of the Brethren, Oakview Drive, on Thursday, August 6th from 6 to 9 PM.  Funeral and interment services will be conducted at the Westernport Church of the Brethren on Friday, August 7th at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Diane May officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Westernport Church of the Brethren.
