Marjorie Smiley

December 23, 1935 — May 10, 2026

Westernport, Maryland

Marjorie “Margie” (Beegle) Smiley of Westernport passed away on May 10, 2026 at her home. She received the ultimate Mother’s Day gift, as she was carried away to her heavenly home.

Born December 23, 1935 at her maternal grandparent’s home in East Providence Township, PA, she was the daughter of the late Fred O. Beegle and Mildred (Mellott) Beegle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Smiley; her only brother, Roger F. Beegle; her sisters, Sara Hayward and Fay Grimes; her son, Paul A. Smiley; and a daughter-in-law, Diana Smiley. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Margie was married to Paul A. Smiley on December 6, 1958 - they celebrated 50 years of marriage together before his passing. She was a graduate of Bedford High School, Bedford, PA and Catherman’s Business School, Cumberland. Margie was employed with the Town of Westernport as the Assistant City Clerk for more than 25 years. She retired on June 1, 1998, having worked with six different mayors during her employment. She became to know the town’s history and residents very well, but her heart was always in Pennsylvania.

Margie enjoyed history, genealogy, travelling, gardening, reading and crafts. Her family held great importance in her life. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends lovingly knew her as “Neena”. Her longtime neighbors became family to her, and she cared for them deeply.

She was a member of the Bruce Outreach Center Church, Westernport, as well as a member of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Friends Cove, PA. At the age of nineteen she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was later baptized in the Holy Spirit. She was of the Pentecostal faith, serving God in whatever manner she could. The Bible was her road map on her sojourn here, she, believed and adhered to its teaching of salvation, prayer and serving God.

Becoming a mother to three young children upon marriage, she is reared and survived by Linda L. Wolford, Tazewell, TN, Jean L. Paugh, Tazewell, TN, David A. (Kris) Smiley, Moyock, NC, Diane L. (David Jr.) Cowan, Westernport; and Danny P. Smiley, Westernport. Margie is also survived by her grandchildren, Christin D. (Scott) Windle, Josiah A. (fiancé Chasity) Harvey, Terah L. Harvey, David W. (Hunter) Cowan III, Matthew P. Cowan, Shannon (Tim) Hall, Michelle (Zach) Adams, Danielle Smiley, K. Jane (Darren) Bates, Edward (Mary) Paugh, and Jason Paugh, twenty-two great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
