John "Pete" Custer

John David “Pete” Custer, 93 of Water Station Run Road, Lonaconing, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, where he resided for almost two years.
Born on July 21, 1921 in Westernport, he was the son of the late Thomas and Blanche (Blizzard) Custer. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Frances (Gentry) Custer; brothers, Oliver, Ralph, Melvin, Paul and Robert Custer; and sisters, Mary Warnick, Mamie Paugh and Shirley Trenum. Pete was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Pete retired from the automatic finishing department of Westvaco, with 29 years of service. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church, Lonaconing. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, ginseng hunter and loved spending time outdoors. Pete was a true man of God, a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He never met a stranger and he loved sharing his stories with family and friends. Pete will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Frances Ann Nolan and special son-in-law, Bill of Lonaconing, and his two precious grandchildren, Jim Robertson and Teri Lynn Werner of Carlos and Tracy Bennett and husband Aaron of Midlothian, and by the light of his life, a great granddaughter, Brilee Ann Bennett, whom he called “Pappy’s little bundle of joy.” Pete is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a special nephew, Tom Kenney. He is also survived by special neighbors, Pat and Butch Russell, who were like family, Melvin Russell, who was his “porch buddy”, and a special friend, Paul Nolan.
Family and friends will be received at Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton on Thursday, November 6 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Friday, November 7 at 11:00 am with Rev. George Loar officiating.
Interment will be in Mt. View Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Western Maryland Health System Hospice or the Schwab Family Cancer Center in memory of John “Pete” Custer.
