James Leroy “Jim” Metz, 76 of Hagerstown and formerly of Westernport passed away on August 15, 2025 at Doey’s House in Hagerstown.
Born December 11, 1948, he was the son of the late William Franklin and Lillian Virginia (Clayton) Metz. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jerry (Ellis) Metz; his siblings, William “Muckle” Metz, JoAnn McConnell, Sally Koch, Dorothy Wittenben, Wilhelmina Mancuso, Priscilla Metcalfe, Jenny Herman, Paul Metz, Richard “Butch” Metz, and Robert “Baldy” Metz.
Jim was a 1966 graduate of Bruce High School. He was a Vietnam Veteran, having served in the United States Army. He also served in the Maryland National Guard for fifteen years. Jim worked and retired from General Motors in Baltimore, Maryland, but continued to stay busy with his own home improvement ventures and various other employments until his full retirement at the age of 70. James loved cars, carpentry, birdwatching, dogs and helping other people. Jim's genuine warmth and affection resulted in his making life-long friends wherever he moved, often trying new hobbies such as boating, motorcycle riding, and target shooting.
Jim is survived by his brother, Marshall “Marsh” Metz and wife Emma; sister, Janice Mayhew and husband Pat; son, James “Jimmy” Metz, Jr.; stepson, Gary Dugger and wife Stacia Sauerwein; stepdaughter, Jerian Moeller and husband Cary and their children; Zachary and partner Deanna, Nikolas, Zoe and partner Georg and great grandson Desmond; his sisters-in-law, Patty Metz, and Margaret Metz; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, 19006 Legislative Road, Barton, on Sunday, September 7th from 2 to 3 p.m. with a memorial service starting at 3:00 p.m.
