Hazel G. (Flick) Legge DeWitt Ross, 98, a resident of the Moran Manor Nursing Center, and formerly of Backbone Mountain and Maryland Avenue, Westernport, ascended into her Heavenly Home, Friday March 29, 2013.

Born January 7, 1915 in Barnum, WV, she was the daughter of the late Amnon V. and Edna B. (Daniels) Flick.

Hazel left school in the 8th grade to care for her brothers and sisters while her mother worked after the death of her father.  At the age of 14, Hazel went to work at the WV Pulp and Paper Company to help support her family.  She obtained her GED in 1974.  Hazel married her first husband, Charles R. Legge in 1931.  Together they had three children, Charles W. Legge and Dorothy (Legge) Riggleman, both residing in Westernport.  They also had a son Kenneth R. Legge, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1957.  Charles R. Legge died in 1952.  Hazel married her second husband Evan “Hickey” DeWitt in 1957.  They had a son Evan Jr. of Saltsburg, Pa.  Evan Sr. passed away in 1987.  Hazel married her third husband, Clifford Ross.  Clifford died in 2002.

During her life, in addition to the Paper Mill, Hazel sold Amway, Shaklee, and World Book Encyclopedias, and also worked at the Deer Park Water Bottling Plant.  She was affectionately known as “Nana” to her nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and four great-great granddaughters, which made her a five generation grandmother.  In addition to the surviving children and grandchildren, Hazel is also survived by her sister, Leona DeWitt of Swanton, and daughters-in-laws, Bonnie Legge of Westernport and Susan DeWitt of Saltsburg, PA.

Everyone got a kick out of her playing her accordion, something that she did quite well.  Everyone enjoyed her “home cookin”, especially for special occasions and holidays.  Hazel loved the Lord and her churches, the Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Bethel Holiness Church of Lonaconing.

Friends and family will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Monday from 6 to 9 PM.  A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 11:00 AM, with Rev. George Loar officiating.

Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport.

Pallbearers will be Joe Braithwaite, Dick Legge, Steve Riggleman, Christopher Pearce, Brian Legge, and Jeremy Bradley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Tri-Towns Ambulance Service, Westernport.

The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff at Moran Manor Nursing Center for the compassion and care given to Hazel during her stay there.
