Born March 5, 1927 in Westernport, MD, Fern Alleda Striplin, (89) of Rotunda West, FL, was at home, surrounded by her loving family when she went to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, June 17, 2016.  The daughter of the late Maude (DUCKWORTH) and Ernest Martin of Westernport, MD.

She was preceded in death by husband James W. Green (married 40 yrs.), and deceased husband Leo A. Niland (married 10 years). She is survived by her loving husband Donald L. Striplin, of Rotunda West, FL (married 14 yrs.).

Fern was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Martin, and daughter Fern Murray and husband James of Piedmont, WV.  Fern has two daughters, Gay Lee Armentrout and husband John (Pete), Keyser, WV, and Ruth Schadt, Westernport, MD.  She also has 8 step-children, Margaret (Peggy) Ulrich and husband Gil of Port Charlotte, FL, Donald Striplin and wife Patricia of Castle Rock, CO, Patrick Striplin and wife Kathy of Port Charlotte, FL, Chester Striplin and wife Anne of Long Island, NY, Michael Striplin and wife June, of Nashville, TN, Regina (Gina) Beltran and husband Gerson of Rotunda West, FL, Christine Wandling and husband Reggie of Austin, TX and Tom Striplin and wife Jaime of Mt. Savage, MD.  Also preceded in death by her sister Hazel Morris and husband Elmer of Westernport, MD. She is survived by her sister Edith Wilcox, whose husband, Clay of Beckley WV is deceased.

Fern lovingly welcomed her very large and extended family with a total of 11 children, 32 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. Her joy in life was children and her home was always open to them.  Her motto was "Our youth are our future."

Fern was a graduate of Bruce High School (1945) and a graduate of Allegany Community College, Cumberland, MD (1978) as a licensed practical nurse.

She was a member of Stoney Run Baptist Church Westernport, MD where she served as church clerk and performed card mission before moving to Florida.  She served many years as a Sunday school teacher, church camp counselor and youth leader.  She also attended St. Peter's Catholic Church in Westernport, MD and St. Francis of Assisi in Grove City, FL.

Fern was a Girl Scout and served as a Girl Scout leader with membership lasting 35 years.  While a member of the Shawnee Girl Scout Council she served on the Board and on the nominating committee.

Fern also served as street commission on the Luke, MD Town Council before resigning to marry and move to Florida.  She was a member of the Class of '45 Lunch Bunch.  She was an avid reader and writer, keeping in touch with old friends, making new friends, and keeping in touch with relatives all over the United States.  She will be greatly missed by the many lives that she has touched and transformed over the years.

At Fern’s request she was cremated.

Friends and family will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Thursday, June 30, 2016 from 1 PM to 3 PM and 6 PM to 7 PM.  A memorial service will follow the visitation on Thursday at 7:00 PM, with Rev. Gary Morris officiating.
