Ernest Luther Metz SR, 82, of Creek Bottom Road, Barton, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2012 in Barton.

Born July 5, 1929 in Barton, he was the son of the late Samuel A. Metz SR and the late Leona M. (Hartman) Metz.  A daughter, Holly J. Metz, also preceded him in death.

Luther was a 1947 graduate of Barton High School.  He was formerly employed by the Allegany County Board of Education and eventually retired from Westvaco Corp, with 28 ½ years of service, having worked in the maintenance department.  He was a life member of Barton Hose Company, a member of Barton United Methodist Church, and a member of the former Barton Lodge #94 I.O.O.F., where he was the longtime caretaker of Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.  He was also instrumental in the revitalization of the Morrison Cemetery, Mill Run.  Luther was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting and mushroom gathering.  He never met a stranger and enjoyed conversation with anyone.

He leaves behind his wife, Norma J. (Symons) Metz, a son, Ernie Metz and wife Jane of Swanton, a daughter, Nancy Radcliffe of Keyser, WV, two brothers, Samuel A. Metz JR of Barton, Paul Metz of Baltimore, and a sister, Virginia Carol Spiker of Camp Hill, PA.  He is also survived by a granddaughter, Megan Pope and husband Billy of Keyser, WV, two great grandchildren, Tate Riggleman and Zane Pope, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM.  The Barton Hose Company will hold a memorial service at the Boal Chapel on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

A funeral service will be conducted at Barton United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Sandy Cowan and Rev. John Park officiating.

Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
