Darrell Gene Winebrenner passed away peacefully in his home in Westernport, MD on February 26, 2026.
Born on November 2, 1943, he was the son of Grant and Ruth Winebrenner of Grantsville, MD. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jim and Sonny, and sister Virginia.
He was a graduate of Northern High School and a proud veteran of the US Air Force. He spent more than 30 years as a Sears service technician repairing electronics and appliances before retiring. Growing weary of retired life, he earned his CDL and began working as a commercial truck driver, later pulling trailers for FEMA before finally settling down and retiring for good.
Like a pair of slippers you can't let go of because they are so comfortable, Darrell celebrated his 60th anniversary with Barb in November of 2025. Faith and family were the foundation of his life, from his many years attending Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and singing in the choir, to caring for family and friends.
Darrell was a loving and devoted father to his sons. He was rightfully proud that nothing could prevent him from attending every sporting event his sons participated in, often cheering with such gusto that his was the loudest voice on the field. This caused no end of embarrassment for his boys at the time, but grew into a loving memory as they grew to understand it as the manifestation of his enormous pride in them. He jumped at every opportunity to help his kids and grandkids, ready to roll at any time for any reason.
His favorite pastime was fishing from the surf or off a pier in Nags Head, NC, doing so as much as his loving wife would allow. Even when his only catch was an empty hook thanks to hungry crabs, the sun shining off the sea, the ocean breeze blowing through what was left of his hair, and the salty air warming his skin were enough to consider the day a roaring success. May he have warm, sunny, breeze-filled days forever.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sons, Jeff and Chris; his grandchildren, Brian, Lauren, and Ben; and his great-grandchildren, Lucas and Leo. He is also survived by one sister, Carolyn Knickmeier of Sierra Vista, Arizona.
At Darrell’s request, he was cremated.
The family will receive friends at the St. James Episcopal Church, Westernport on Saturday, March 14, 2026 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. A memorial service will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m.
Inurnment will be at the St. Peter Cemetery, Westernport.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Mineral County Humane Society or the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in honor of Darrell.
