Carol Jean Niland, 75, of Potomac Heights, Keyser, and formerly of Piedmont, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Heartland of Keyser Nursing Center.

Born April 15, 1940, she was the daughter of Mildred (Parker) Ross of Keyser, and the late William Clark Ross.

Carol was a 1958 graduate of Piedmont High School.  In her earlier years Carol was a coal miner, having been one of only two women at that time to work in deep mining for Laurel Run Coal Company.  She was an avid Nascar fan, especially Dale Earnhart Sr, and West Virginia University sports fan.  Carol was also a lover of all animals and was Protestant by faith.

In addition to her mother, Mildred, she leaves behind a son, Rick Niland and wife Barbara of Bunker Hill, and a granddaughter, Shay Petitto and husband Michael of Morgantown.

At Carol’s request, her body was donated to the Human Gift Registry of West Virginia University.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, MD, on Monday, August 31st at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Vickie Minnich officiating.

Friends and family will be received from 12:00 to 1:00 PM on Monday, August 31st.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Foundation, C/O Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, PO Box 9300, Morgantown, WV  26506-9300.
